Faster Word Processor for G4 iMac

I've got Office 2008 for my Mac Pro, I decided to install it on my G4, and it is utterly slow. The program can't even catch up to my typing, and I don't consider myself a fast typist, but the program lags with everything i do.

It's an 800 mhz G4, 384 megs of ram, running Tiger. I would upgrade the ram but that's another $80 out of my pocket.

Is there a faster version of Office (older I assume) or just an overall faster word processor out there that plays nice with the G4?

Don't recommend iWork, because Pages lags on my Mac Pro, I don't expect it to be any better on a G4.

I've also noticed that Microsoft Office is blazingly fast with Windows, now it's kinda expected, but why is it slow as a Turd on the Mac?

I don't know how advanced your word processing needs are but Bean and Abiword might be worth a look. Of course, there is also NeoOffice, Mellel and Nisus Writer as well.
