I have been reading many usb 3 reviews and such but am looking for the fastest usb 3 drive that is compatible with my retina mbp, 1tb in capacity. I saw the buffalo ministation thunderbolt which is pretty good at about 108mb/s read/write, but it is $230 so I was looking into anything cheaper. I am fine with just usb 3 if it will give me faster speeds that this. Thanks.

Can't have it both ways. ~100MB/s is about as good as it get with regular hard drives. To get anything faster, you'll need to be looking at solid state disks; and at 1TB capacity it'll be anything but cheap.

If you're open to smaller capacities, right now I have a SATA 6G SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure. I get about 300MB/s for sequential speeds, though my drive capacity is limited to 240GB.
