Fastest way to annotate pictures?

I have the App skitch which is pretty cool, but opening the App, loading the right photo, annotating it, saving it - that's too long. I thought it would be faster if I open the photo from the Apple stock photo app and use the skitch shortcut, but it seems broken. Now I have to open a picture, run a Workflow from the workflow.app, choose 'open in skitch' and annotate it there. Is there an even faster way to annotate pictures? Maybe a better App than Skitch? I can't understand why there isn't a stock app from Apple to do that.

Skitch has been discontinued and is no longer supported - which may be why the open in doesn't work. I hope someone here can chime in with a nice alternative! I've been using Pixelmator but it's rather overkill.
