Please don't go the 3rd party. I bought one and no, it doesn't work.
Then I read some article about a (great!) guy that tests all kind of cables and it was a 3rd party usb-c cable that fried is google-chrome-book. Seriously, don't go there and save $20 with the chance to fry your presious iPad Pro.

By "3rd party", are you saying cables or adapters, or both? What is your opinion on using an Anker 60w charger mentioned earlier in this thread (which supposedly has 29w charging for the iPad pro) + official Apple USB-c to lightning cable?

My personal view - Anker is a pretty reliable brand. I believe the Anker 60W USB-C charger should work, simply because the circuitry is designed to also charge the MacBook (14.5V / 2A). We'll need someone to run a test first of course.

But cable-wise, the USB-C to lightning cable is too new for any third-party OEM to have come up with a reliable design yet.

Appreciate it, will be checking back to hear your report.
Got home late and then got sucked into a hockey game.

Testing right now
Going to run 2 -15 minutes tests.
1. Anker with Apple usb-c to lightning cable
2. Apple 29w with Apple usb-c to lightning cable

Be back in 25 minutes
[doublepost=1461289683][/doublepost]Quick test
1. Anker with Apple usb-c to lightning cable ......
15 minutes 66% to 70%

2. Apple 29w with Apple usb-c to lightning cable
15 minutes 70% to 78%

Interesting addition finding. The third party cable I have doesn't work with the Anker cable.

I might returning mine.

Hmm, interesting findings. Sounds like the Anker charger doesn't actually "quick charge" the Ipad pro even though it's 29w. I may be holding off on this purchase , unless you find something new.

It just doesn't charge as fast as the apple charger

Hey, just wanted to see if you had used the anker charger anymore recently and if you found the same results that it charges slower than the official 29w apple charger? Have you returned your anker charger?

I just tested the Anker charger. Sending it back. My Apple 29W charges at about 1% per minute. Full iPad Pro in about 1.5 hous.

I had it on Anker charger for 1 hour and only got from 40-58%.

I'd rather take my older Anker multi port adapter and the 29W charger than have all in one slower charger. The 29W adapter with lightning to USBc cable is awesome.

Appreciate your info on this! Really would have been nice if the Anker charged it quickly, but looks like I'll have to stick with the 29w charger for now.

It doesn't charge the iPad Pro at 29w. Read the reviews.

Yeah I added my review as "3-star". It's pretty disappointing that it doesn't work for the iPad Pro. It's also puzzling because it implies that the circuitry for the MacBook charging is clearly different than for the one for iPad Pro, yet Apple must have known about it beforehand for the existing 29W charger to work.
[doublepost=1462240820][/doublepost]Here's a photo of the charging using the now unavailable Battery Health app:

Essentially it ends up charging at 5V / 3A instead of the preferred 14.5V / 2A.

Yes I agree. When I originally posted there was only 1 review up, which covered only the MacBook..
When I did my quick test it was evident the charger did not support quick charging for any "i" device.

Still a solid charger.

I'm not sure of your charging with the 29W adapter. I get about 1% per minute. Are you using an Apple USBc to Lightning?

With Anker I was about 18% in one hour which is about where you are. With Apple 29W I was more like triple the speed. The iPad pro will go from single digits to fully charged in a touch over 1.5 hours.

I know the 29W charging is fast, but I think 1.5 hours is a little hard to believe. My experience is that it'll take at least 2 hours to fully charge from single digits - could you test it again, with screenshots to show the % over time...?

This was a very quick test. All I wanted to see was if the speed matched or if one was faster than the other.
yes it was the apple cable. The non-apple cable I have is marked and the performance is much equal to using the 29W with the 12W charger.
Unfortunately I didn't have the time to run a more thorough test.

I'm interested in something to charge my iPP quicker - sounds like I'll stick with the Apple charger, grumbling as I pay the premium for it.

would using something like monoprice usb-c to usb-a and then a regular usb to lightning hinder the added charging speed of 29w?

It appears so in my couple days of experimenting, certainly not getting like 1% a minute I dont think?
Is that 1% with the display off and not using it or with casual use too?

thx, really dont want to buy any more cables

At the moment I think you don't have a choice. The only combination known to work so far is all Apple - Apple 29W USB-C charger + Apple USB-C to Lightning cable.

oh let me clarify, the method I use actually does work and charges the device. I just don't think its fast enough to realize 29w speeds, but I dont know.

are these 1% a minute claims with the device not in use?

Yes, it is probably not fast charging @ 29W. So far no one has been able to reproduce fast charging with a non-Apple setup.

My iPad is fully charged but here is the most extensive tests you will find. The 1% per minute is pretty close.

This link is to the most extensive testing you will find. Here is one data point from the testing. It's worth looking at the testing. Bottom line the improvement is pretty massive. If you only charge iPad at night it might not make a difference but for travel and other uses the fast charging comes in super handy.

  • In 10 minutes with the screen turned off, the 29W adapter charged the iPad Pro by 9.7%; the 12W adapter charged it by 2.9%.
