The only one I can think of right now is
Lady of a Certain Age by The Divine Comedy

Beautiful song about a rich girl who grows up with an unloving family, full of desperation and despair. But it sounds so true, it's probably happened a million times before. Theres a line in it "You gave him children, a girl and a boy", that really gets me. It's like the only reason they exist is to keep her husband happy.

"You chased the sun around the Cote d'Azur
Until the light of youth became obscured
And left you all alone and in the shade
An English lady of a certain age
And if a nice young man would buy you a drink
You'd say with a conspiratorial wink
"You wouldn't think that I was fifty three"
And he'd say,"no, you couldn't be!"

That song was actually written by Gordon Lightfoot, 33 years before Johnny Cash died!

My post said performed by Johnny Cash. I find Johnny Cash's performance of the song to be much more moving than Lightfoot's, especially when considering the circumstances under which he recorded it.

So, what exactly is your point?

I've really enjoyed Johnny Cash's last 4-5 albums, produced by Rick Rubins. They really seem to cut to the soul of the music and to the essence of Johnny's voice. Even though most were covers, they leave a memorable impact.

Simple. Powerful.

It's about a serial killer that killed some boys after raping them. I'd say that's a sad song.

Thanks. I was pretty sure it was about a child molester judging from what I could make out from listening to the lyrics.

Mad World - Michael Andrews from the Donnie

Why have so many people named this song? It is a sad song, I guess, but is it just that popular?

And I thought Gary Jules sang the Donnie Darko version. I never heard the original, but I have only heard of Gary Jules because of this song.

Read your own post. You clearly stated that Johnny Cash wrote the song.

John Denver makes me sad. There's Annie's Song and Leaving On a Jet Plane, both written for his wife.. He died in a plane crash. :( :( :(

Chasing Cars-Snow Patrol
Behind Blue Eyes- Limp Bizkit

I'm not much into sad songs

hah you know behind blue eyes was done originally by the who right?
and it has been covered numerous times. so if you really like it, you can find some other good versions of it too

$1,000 wedding - Gram Parsons
Who Knows Where The Time Goes - Sandy Denny
My Sister - Julianna Hatfield

The "Exit Wounds" story (7 songs) by Hourglass, from their second CD "Subconscious". Various points of view about a father going to war, leaving a wife, son and little daughter behind and not coming back.

Apocalyptica - "Farewell". I get goosebumps everytime I hear it!

Evanescence - "My Immortal". I don't listen to them much anymore, but this is still one sad song.

Iced Earth - "I Died For You".

Lacuna Coil - "Enjoy The Silence" (Depeche Mode cover). Which leads me to this thread.

Rcdovai - "5000 kilómetros al sur". This song is sad because I know the performer personally, and it reflects a life changing event.

I can't believe I'm going to name this one, but your post brought this to mind:

"He Gets That From Me" by Reba McEntire

I saw the video a few years ago, about a mother and son going about their daily lives. Always with a sense of something missing. Then you find out the father died in Iraq/Afghanistan. The song captured perfectly the loss of one's life and the effect upon your loved ones.

Everybody Hurts - REM
Very cool song and very cool video.

Blue Alert - Madeleine Peryoux
Subtle yet engaging

I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free - Nina Simone
Thought provoking

Drive - Cars
Thinking outside the box

Cannonball - Damien Rice
Very nice

"The End of the Tour," by They Might Be Giants. It's a sad song to begin with, and it has some personal significance for me as well.
