FB Messenger Notifications

Can anyone tell me how to get notifications for new message requests in FB Messenger? I get notifications of new messages, but when a new person tries to start a conversation I don't know until I open the app and happen to see it.

Wouldn't a new message that starts a conversation just be the same as a new message for any conversation (existing or not)?

No, when I get a reply it has a push notification and icon badge. If there's a new request when I open the app I have to Accept or decline it, but I get no notification of one waiting for me to approve or decline.

Are we talking about a friend request? I don't recall requests to start a conversation as people simply just send a message and that's it (unless it's some special setting that relates to that).

Itmc I'll be a setting about how new conversations come in, but they ask for my approval before starting. It's jot friend requests, it's new messages in messenger from non friends
