Most people wouldn't even notice that their sensitive data is being spied on, as they wouldn't see any difference in daily use. So we should give this a pass.

At this point, through various means China already knows everything. I wonder if it still makes a difference.

China should just open up a business where if I forget my password to a certain account or an important number or if I want to check my credit score I can just ask them.

No ID verification even necessary when I ask for my own info, because when I contact them of course they'd already know if it's me.

🚨🚨Hot take warning 🚨🚨

I would rather have the Chinese government spy on me than the NSA or FBI. China doesn't have any jurisdiction over me and nothing they can do with my data will have any effect on my life.

Pretending that TikTok and ByteDance are somehow worse than Google or Facebook or any other American company that hoovers up all of my data is just silly.

That's weird. Shouldn't the government have the sole authority to ban apps? Why ask Apple and Google? On the contrary, private entities shouldn't be allowed to do that.

Businesses and or the government in the PRC (which are really the same thing) up to nefarious things?

Let me hide my "shocked face" for a moment. Oh, my. I don't know what to do. No one could have ever seen this coming.

The PRC has been a problem now for over a decade. No one in power wanted to own up to it for various reasons. One being they were all making shipping containers of money. Piles of money that make Walter White look like he made social worker money. All that profit, while keeping inflation low through cheap labor. That keeps the cash flowing to the uber rich while keeping capital flowing via low interest rates and ever increasing stock prices.

Now that the Gravy Train to Tasty Town is coming off the rails, everyone wants to bash on China. Where were they 10+ years ago? How about before 'Rona? Now even the WHO is "open" to probing the "lab leak" theory. This according to CBS News and The Washington Post.

It's just like when China purchased the Varyag aircraft carrier from Ukraine in 1998 via a phony holding company to make it into a "floating casino". Last time I checked, floating casinos don't carry and launch things like Shenyang J-15's and YJ-91 missiles. What a crock of excrement. Everyone KNEW what the PRC was up to and just let it slide for. Reasons.

So, anyone who's even the slightest bit surprised that the PRC is using an App to Hoover up as much info as they can on what WILL be their next enemy on the global stage is at best naive.

Maybe. But I remember watching the Brady Bunch, F-Troop, Alice, and other garbage on television for a couple of hours every day. So whatever. Plus there is a LOT of educational and interesting content on TikTok for me like home inspection adivice, or plumbing, or woodworking. Not to mention a lot of cute pet dog, cat, donkey, goose, stories to put a smile on my face.

+1,000,000 for mentioning F-Troop.

What was that old saying? If you aren't paying for the service, you're the product? Something something...

I'd be happier overall if it was banned and access cut off. But I'm from a different era of the Internet, and the idea of watching 10-20 second clips of people trying to be funny is such a colossal waste of time to me.

First, I'm 60 and TikTok is entertaining as hell. I am facinated how people are using it quite well to tell stories.

Second, someone clarify what specific data is collected that I need to give a shiite about since my data is already all over the Internet. My location? I don't care. My employer? I don't care. My marital status? I don't care. My salary? I work for the state, anyone can look up my salary on the Internet. What is the line that should not be crossed? Legit question. Thanks.
If data about what you view and post is centralized in China then in theory the government there could begin to shape what videos end up on your "for you" page which could influence your views in a subtle way. I think Trump didn't like it because people were fed some negative videos about him and he assumed the Chinese government was behind it.

Regardless, I think the answer is that people just have to get more smart about how they interact with social media. People should not get their news from these platforms and if you start to feel angry about something you've seen or read be suspicious and try to get more information outside of whatever platform you're on. I can't tell you how many times I've read something infuriating on Facebook only to find that the person or organization who posted it left out quite a few pertinent details.

Tik Tok has a very interesting algorithm.
But I am curious to know what data could be used in such a malicious manner?
As I understand it , the platform is able to influence social opinions in different countries by targeting specific content to be published and seen. But I suspect other platforms do the same (facebook etc) suggesting that they are indeed publishers in the nature of their algorithms and targeted audiences and there paying customers.

It should be up to the phone's owner to decide what they want, not the government.

I think this is covered quite nicely with Apple's App Privacy requirements, although there should be a couple of more categories to clearly define the Apps monetization of the owners private data. And it might be a good idea when installing the App to make the user approve that they want this type of intrusion.

Haha of course the US is whining again. US citizens should be far more concerned about the US government than any foreign ones.
I am a US citizen and live in the US, but have worked overseas, and this is one of the most truthful statements that I have seen on the internet lately (maybe even in years).

American's are in general ignorant of what is really going on around them and with their own government. I've come to think that most of them never leave their gaming console, let alone their living quarters.

God only knows what sinister deeds the CPP will accomplish if they find out Americans watch hot girls dance to k-pop

Have you ever considered the possibility that people are just more aware of bad things happening in America, because it's more relevant and freely reported? And people in general are unaware of things going on out of their immediate circles.

Brendan Carr was appointed by Trump. This is just a continuation of what Trump started, not a new revelation by an unaffiliated party.

for us , one day we want to meet a friend to talk but he and another one on phone with live tik tok . I'm not sure what our world become but we think this live stream thing should be limit ! .

Interesting that the current administration has completely 180’d on this and is now pushing to have it blocked. I wonder what finally pushed the needle on this issue?
It's not the current administration. It's one guy at the FCC that Trump appointed. Brendan Carr
