when can i delete original files off my hard drive
i'm brand new to FCE and trying to make a 6 hour montage in 3 days
i packed my hard drive and my 250gb lacie!
once clips are in the timeline sequence does final cut make a copy?
hope someone's awake this early...
youre probably all going to perkins after church then watching football and i'll never get this done

No no no. Final Cut does NOT make a copy of the clips...it references them. Trust me, you do not want to move or delete those clips or you will have to recapture them all over again and start from scratch (I learned this the hard way when I first started using FCP 6 years ago in my sophmore year of high school and was trying to get a video done for the cheerleaders...I needed some drive space and deleted the clips because I thought FCP made a copy and low and behold...MEDIA OFFLINE everywhere...it was such a mess). Final Cut references their location nad uses that to display the media in the program. Once they are in their respective folders, that's it...you're pretty much stuck. Once you are done with the project, and have put it on tape or DVD and have decided that there is no more work that needs to be done....THEN you can delete the clips.

thanks
figured it out today
then when ready to export to tape discovered my powerbook has only 1 firewire port and no one seems to sell splitters, just 6 port docks
so 6 hours later here we go again

What is an actual montage edit exactly ?

A montage is a series of images or clips usually set to music. For example, if you are watching a football game on TV and at the end of the game they show a hi-light reel of all the big plays of the game that would be a montage. Or, you are watching Rocky and he as a sequence of him training set to the song Eye of the Tiger. That's also a montage.
