How do I get a video off of a DVD and into FCE for editing.
Here's how I do it.
You need: Apple's MPEG 2 QuickTime Component and MPEG Streamclip.
  • Copy the whole video_ts folder to your hard drive.
  • Open the DVD (using the video_ts folder you just copied over, not the spinning silver disc one) in MPEG streamclip
  • select I and O points
  • Convert to Quicktime and use the DV PAL or NTSC compressor

You will have a Quicktime file that will import straight into FCE.
Your DVD can't have copy protection or this won't work.

I use MPEG Streamclip a lot but there is also Handbrake.

I use Handbrake to rip DVDs for iTunes but not for editing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but using Handbrake, the workflow would be like this:
  • rip DVD using Handbrake to H.264 MP4
  • convert H.264 to (something FCE can edit) using (something else)
  • import into FCE

Is that about right? If so, can someone fill in the blanks?
