FCP clips randomly attaching themselves to others

FCP clips attaching themselves to others down the sequence so that when I try to shift a big section of the timeline it highlights clips not highlighted and moves them anyway or tells me I'm throwing things out of sync. If I delete or alter one of these attached clips, it deletes its match down the timeline.

I'm running FCP academic 6.1 I believe. Ideas?
