I just finished editing something and exported it as a quicktime movie (using current settings etc.)

I played back the file and found something horrible, the brightness will suddenly jump.

I don't mean that the exported file is brighter or darker than what I had in FCP. What I mean is, a scene will start and will continue along normally, then suddenly it will get a shade darker. This was not in the original footage or in FCP, this only happened after exporting.

I tried to play it in iTunes to see if the problem was with quicktime, but it happens there also (and seems to have a weird distorting issue as it looks like we keep zooming in a fraction then zooming out.)

Has anyone ever heard of this, or any ideas?

is the sequence fully rendered before export?

For the zooming part, make sure you didn't accidentally set a key frame somewhere or hit the scale on the motion tab somewhere. Soun ds crazy but I've done it.

Is the brightness issue always in the same place?

What codec did you export with, or did you literally just do "export to quicktime"
