Hi Guys,

I'm just tidying up my home videos in final cut pro x and I want to do a quick edit to remove the unusable/pointless footage and then export the file out to iTunes for viewing through Apple TV.

Key thing I want to achieve is to export with a high quality master that can be used for re editing with other videos in the future.

The test file I'm using is a 576.1MB.mov file

A master file pro res 422 codec increases it to 6.19 Gig
A Master H.264 codec increases it to 951 meg

My question which is the best setting for my purpose? I have enough space for the master files but is that overkill? is H.264 good enough to retain a high quality picture and good enough for future editing.

Thanks

James

High quality is subjective, and your opinion may change 2 years from now. Its always best to archive with the highest detail (original) which are typically the largest files.

I usually don't take up storage space with export file archiving. I have the FXPX library with its original media backed up, so I can always open it up, duplicate the project and make more edits.

Export it with the h264 settings. I guess your master video files are also h264 as well, so you would retain the same quality. Prores is an over kill for you, you will just fill your space faster while not gaining anything and you probably not be able to stream it like you said.
