But I still can't believe there aren't' a million people editing 1080p on these rigs here yet. Maybe it's just that no one is using FCP X.

I can edit 1080 on a first gen MBP without skipping frames if the footage isn't grouped on Avid Media Composer. The issue might just be FCP. Try a trial version of Avid MC. And no, professionals are not using fcpX. They gimped it for professional use and have slowly released updates to get semi-professional features back. I edit on prime time network tv shows and we use nothing but Avid MC.

The footage works fine in premiere CS6 and iMovie, so it's definitely an issue with FCP X. There's no reason for us to regurgitate the FCP X back and forth. It works well for what some folks do.

Unfortunately not working too well for me at the moment :(.

The issue is that FCP X editing in 1080p requires more of the CPU and GPU as compared with imovie or premiere pro. A more detailed explanation regarding the hardware restraints of the rMBP in dealing with CPU heavy software and resulting in dropping FPS can be found here.

Thanks, I have read that article - it's great.

Would that explain why it has the same problem when in clamshell mode and hooked up to a 1080p monitor, however?

No.

All that you've detailed suggests a problem with FCP X on your machine. I don't use it, so I can be of little help with that. In fact, a trip to an Apple store might be the quickest route to resolution...

I wish there was one within 6 hours of me :( I do appreciate the consideration, though.

I'm editing on a RMBP. 1080 24 dslr footage. Works great for me. Not sure if you mentioned this but you'd want to make sure you've unchecked graphic switching in energy saver prefs so it's forced to use graphic card. Also using a 5400 rpm drive with USB 2 has been too slow for me to edit smoothly. USB 3 drive has worked much better.

After re reading your thread, it seems the computer does just fine in 4-5 other programs with that footage. So I don't think it's your ssd or hardware or you would notice issues across the board. I'm going to guess its an fcpx issue. Maybe you can do another install a third time. ? Maje sure its completely uninstalled, etc Who knows. Hope it works out.
