FCP6 & FCP7 Compatibility

Can anyone with access to both FCP6 and FCP7 speak to the compatibility of project files between the two versions? Most importantly, can FCP6 successfully and simply open a new FCP7 project file?

... of course assuming that the project file doesn't contain the use of many new FCP7 features.

I tried exporting the FCP7 project as an XML file to import into FCP6 and it didn't work. Is there any way to do this!? It's really important!
