Current versions of FCP require at least Big Sur, so if you need a newer version, and want to run it on supported hardware, yes, you‘ll need a newer Mac.Is this the end of the line for my old 27" iMac late 2012 ?
Will I have to pony up for a new Mac?

That's what I did with my 2012 15" unibody MacBook Pro, and it runs Final Cut Pro 10.6.1 very nicely. I don't do as much video editing on it as my M1 MacBook Air, though. It’s not the end of the line for your iMac. You can easily install Big Sur or Monterey on it with Opencore Legacy Patcher.
Nice! I did the same on my late 2012 Mac Mini with only Intel HD 4000 graphics which yours probably (and perhaps OP’s) also has. Video editing is great and so is audio production for meThat's what I did with my 2012 15" unibody MacBook Pro, and it runs Final Cut Pro 10.6.1 very nicely.
