How are you guys storing your overall FCPX projects on a NAS?

I was wondering about having a "temporary" project on the secondary drive (spinning disks) and then having the Master on a NAS. And then do I just copy between projects once I'm done?

I'm just afraid of having the master project open and finding that the network connection isn't fast enough. I dont think it would be, but it would be on a DroboFS and I find speeds aren't always the best sometimes.

At the moment I'm editing on a Lacie drive with TB2

Are you talking about the media library for the project(s)?

You can move the library wherever, but network (NAS) storage for the library is not a great place to edit from, very slow. And the latency will kill editing satisfaction pretty quick. Its a good place to store backups. I try to keep my libraries small so I can move them between fast local storage (internal flash) and slower rotational archives. It can take quite awhile to move a 500GB library from NAS to the local drive.

All subjective, so you could try it and see what you think.

No, not the Media Library, I have it so that the files get copied to the FCPX Project when I import. What I want to do is to have a copy of the Master Project on the NAS and then have the Working Project on the secondary drive of my cMP.

But then I'm just wondering if I let Time Machine backup that secondary drive to the Time Capsule so I have a backed up version on the TC and one on the NAS also (maybe an Automator script to copy the FCPX Project after each edit?)

I'm just a little confused by your use of the term project, sorry.

In Final Cut Pro 10.1 or later, your work content is saved in libraries. Each library contains multiple events and projects in the same location, and it tracks all your media files, your editing decisions, and the associated metadata. You view and define storage locations for media, Motion content, cache files, and library backup files using the Library Properties inspector. You can store these files within the library or in external folders.

FCP automatically backups the library database every 15 minutes to your movies folder by default, but you can change that to what ever path you want. That automatic backup does not include the media, so its relatively small in size.

I use the FCPX default backup and I let time machine perform the routine backup stuff. So the backup gets backed up. I use carbon copy cloner to backup the entire library (which includes the projects and media) on a daily basis to a mirrored drive. I also put the output, exported video, out on the cloud. But thats just me.

Yes ok, this is the part I am thinking. Apologies for some of my terminology. So similar to you, I'd have my Library on the drive on the cMP, and then like you, whether its daily/weekly I'd have it copy to another drive/NAS/TC etc. I do video's for work once a week so that's all I'd need to replicate/copy/backup.
