Wow all this "back and forth" over a figment of imagination, at this point...

And Apple can't seem to bring itself to put a simple headless, dual monitor capable desktop computer on the market at an affordable price point.

Not that they can't, they just don't.

But on this topic, I think it would be cool to see a pad-like device.

The thing is, for a 7-10" diagonal multi-touch display, the cost may be higher, but what about the cost being lower for lack of other pieces.

No second shell, or hinge, or wiring through a hinge.
No physical keyboard with lots of little moving pieces.

A single piece tablet with multitouch, perhaps even haptic feedback, would be fine for a little media or web terminal, document viewer, and light-use interactive console.

Bluetooth a wireless keyboard to it, and you can type normally. Add a mouse, too if you want.

Maybe a couple of USB ports, for connection to an external drive, or camera, or whatever, just for flexibility's sake. Audio output. (preferably over bluetooth and wifi as well) and perhaps a video output to share signal with a larger display, or projector.

Basically a larger, more productive, full-OS iPad Touch. It isn't going to be a work-horse, that is what MacBook Pros are for. If you write papers, either an external keyboard and a small display stand, or a bigger laptop are in order. But what is wrong with providing a high mobility, high versatility portable computing platform under the lineup of regular laptops?

I wish Apple had more variety, as I mentioned with a headless desktop system below the Mac Pro, and a hyper-portable touch-input device under the laptop line, but more OS-enabled than the iPhone/iPod Touch.

MacBook AIR.. that's where the touch screen should be.

The hype of the Macbook Air is gone... Mac fans are not as blind as some suggest. This laptop has very limited use and capabilities (without perypherals) and at a great cost.

Now, if they would of made MacBook Air touch screen, now that would of been a totally useful innovation worth the money. Just like the iPhone was. Imagine seeing Mac's used at retail stores, restaurants, hospital staff and connecting it seamlessly with the iPhone wich could also create a NEW gaming experience, almost like Nintendo Wii, but not really!!!

... what is Apple waiting for?... ughhhhh!!!

Not happening.

  • Touch screens to come down in price (otherwise the MacBook Air would cost way more than it does now).
  • Mac OS X supporting touchscreen (Snow Leopard only goes as far as trackpad touch as far as we know).
  • Applications supporting touchscreen (touchscreen wouldn't be much use without applications to take full advantage of it).
From what I know, Apple doesn't seem to do things halfway, but all the way.

I have 2 ideas and one i would put money on...

1 a 2 sided LCD screen on a backbook air class laptop, with a touch screen on the outside of the closed screen, ala a tablet with out the silly twisting thing for when you need a laptop to type etc.... Perdiction this is down the line

I like this idea a whole lot. can see the outside screen being blank except for :apple: when you have it opened. it would have to be a smaller notebook (ie- 9") but i don't think they'd be able to keep them in stock. i would def. pick something like that up in a heartbeat. makes sense to offer people a gentile transition to full touch screen tablets considering the lack of overall success with tablets in the past. something like this with OSX/windoze capability would make it a corporate necessity.

Give me a tiny touchscreen device of some kind that would make a good ereader and web tablet. And then, when I get home, let it drive a 30" cinema display :)

haha I was thinking this was all feasible... until the 30" display. Dunno why the 30" gives such problems with the mac mini. I suspect the tablet would not handle a very large screen.

Think again...

1. That little twisted thing in the tabet is an ingenious idea. It is saving the consumer hundreads of dollars and helps on the design itself. Think about how much two monitors would cost and how much bigger and/or heavier the laptop would be. You know, even innovative Apple can learn from it's competitors

2. Not only it's better to carry around your iPhone than the laptop, but chances are you are more likely to carry your iPhone at all times. Having an iPhone like functionality on teh laptop. Additionally it would have similar issues as i explained above. It just does not make sense.

Sorry to say this man, but you are waiting to be dissapointed, you are not thinking this through.

let's think about this, a full size screen is to much money, and who would want to touch a laptop screen anyway since it would move every time you did, and think of the smudges...

A glass track pad in interesting but what good is it.... yes you can zoom photos and stuff with your fingers but is this really helpful, beyond the way you can do it now with a standard track pad...

2. a macbook (and pro) with a normal track pad and on the OUTSIDE a glass touch screen aout the size of an iphone/iPod Touch, oh and you could run iPhone/iPod touch app on it... WITHOUT opening your macbook up and powering it up, e-mail, AIM, little games and all the other crap I have on my iPhone is accessible right from the outside of my laptop for when a quick glance, or replay or game or what ever is required. (oh and now apple would add about 2 million extra places to run iPhone/iPod touch apps, as well as making their laptop that much more attractive, AND functional in a real world way.

if apple doesn't to number 2 i will be very surprised (and DISAPPOINTED)

The GPU or something doesn't support the resolution (2560*1600) required for the 30" ACD. They go up to 1920*1200.

the air will evolve into the tablet. There is no use for an air if they have a small tablet for sale. The air's design is perfect for a tablet. Excellent screen space and lightweight and thin design
