Here we are, May, 2020 and still nothing concrete on a USB C iPhone.
I hang on to my iPad Pro 10.5 and I love the thing, great device and I don't want to upgrade it.

However.

If my wifes new iPhone in late 2020, is finally USB C, along with my Android phone, maybe, just maybe I'll consider a new 11" iPad Pro.
They're literally costing themselves a sale here if they keep holding out on this.

There will never be USB C in an iPhone

Jon Prosser has confirmed this. Apple are going portless with one phone from next year

A poll or discussion here hardly moves the product needle anywhere.

Besides that, while it’s practical to only have one charging cable around for everything I won’t let that affect me getting the devices I want to own. I don’t base my purchase decision on the charging cable.

For people having multiple USB-C phones, having a USB-C iPhone might make sense. However, I'm sure majority of iPhone users only have one phone, their iPhone. Meanwhile, they might have Airpods, Beats headphones, iPad, etc, and those have lightning. So for the normal people, having an iPhone with USB-C might actually be more troublesome.

I think that's a heinously stupid decision, but it wouldn't suprise me either.

I have no idea who that person is.

Eventually, the air pod 3 for example night be USB C.
iPad already is.

After all, iPhones used to have that 30 pin connector

Portless is the future which is why it will only likely be on the pro max model at the start

Lightning has obvious advantages over the 30 pin dock connector.
I don't see the advantages of USC-C over lightning for the iPhone. Fast charging, USB3 speed, all are doable on lightning. For the typical consumer, Apple changing iPhone to USB-C is more troublesome and confusing.

I agree that Apple is probably going all the way to portless, rather than simply side-stepping from one type of port to another. I don't like it, but this is Apple we're talking about.

Many people who have a Mac are already in USB C territory. Digital devices outside of Apple get it more and more often. Digital cameras have it. Game consoles have it. Other phones have it. iPad Pro has it. But then again, carrying two different cables is really not an issue just an inconvenience.

That guy also believes in Steve Jobs signature glasses. Everyone will make mistakes eventually. Just depends on when Apple start feeding him misinformation.

There’s no reason to doubt him at all at this stage. Likely because he has multiple sources inside Apple so it’s not just one person where he gets the information

Speculating about the sources stops for me at the memorial glasses which tells me he shouts out anything he’s being fed at this time.

Apple didn’t even market the X as an anniversary edition and they don’t brand a product after Steve. Of course never say never but highly unlikely.

I've been hearing the portless rumours for a while. Try charging your phone that needs to lay on a pad for 8 hours on a plane.

If your phone takes 8 hours to charge you might want to take it to the Apple store once they open in your country.

I think the underlying issue remains valid: wireless charging is not very energy efficient and takes significantly longer compared to traditional charging methods.

Unless you're running some type of Chinese phone farm I don't think the efficiency of wireless charging is an issue. If you're that worried you're taking cold showers and don't have AC or heat in your house.

How long it takes would depend on the charger itself. An 18 watt wired fast chargers will charge faster than a 7.5 watt wireless charger. Until the iPhone 11 many people were using a 5 watt wired charger so in that case a wireless charger would be faster. Just for that rare occasion where perhaps you forget to charge your phone at night or working a double shift having an 18 watt fast charger is an awesome thing. I don't see Apple going completely wireless unless it can provide at least 15 watts.

Not just that, you can't hook up a battery bank, throw your phone in your pocket and cable around to your backpack and charge it.
Same with a plane
Same with a movie cinema (in airplane mode, duh)
etc

Wireless charging, is kinda great in 3 places, work - on your desk, hopme - on your desk, home - next to bed.

I'd like to see them go to USB-C but presumably I'm becoming a minority.

I'm sorry, but how does a Mac having USB-C relate to iPhones needing USB-C? Apple already include USB-C to lightning cable on the 11 Pros, so connectivity to Macs is a not about the type of port on the iPhone, but the type of jack on the other end of the cable.

Digital cameras, other phones, iPad Pros, you are assuming a multi-device tech individual. Majority of lay people don't have any of those. They just have one device, an iPhone. On the other hand, they might have other accessories like Airpods, Beats, etc, which are still on lightning. Changing the port on the iPhone itself to USB-C will only create confusion and inconvenience for the majority of iPhone customers.

Also, sure, Apple put USB-C on iPad Pros, but three out of five iPad models Apple still sells are on lightning (iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini)

Ah the world where there is only the Apple Store with beats and iPhone and AirPods. Sure that’s one example from Macrumors.
Other people have different horizons and dare I say these are not the minority.

Posts like this astound me and reek of the typical "Apple is always right" atittude prevalant across the web.
It's blatantly clear, it couldn't possibly be more clear.
A well designed charger and a well designed phone, would happily charge off a single charger.

You unplug your mac and plug in your phone, it really is that simple and obvious. No need for a second cable, no need to unplug stuff on the macbook, no need to unplug at the charger end under the desk - just remove cable from one device and put into the other.

But you knew this before you replied.

I think it is equally astounding that there are posts that insist Apple doing one single thing, despite the market itself not showing the need for it.

Majority of iPhone users are not Mac users nor iPad Pro users. So USB-C on iPhones are only confusing, especially when the consumer iPhone accessories like Airpods and Beats, and the non-pro iPads, are using lightning. It would be highly unusual if Apple put USB-C on their main product, the iPhone. Considering the push for wireless (wireless charging, Airpods), it would be highly more likely that Apple would simply drop the port altogether.

Sensing your tone at the end, there is clearly no point in continuing this banter. Let's agree to disagree, and I'll take myself out. Cheers.

I still vote for staying with lightning. Significantly more durable, and I rarely even plug it in with wireless charging these days.

I often thought it was more reliable myself until my last two iPhones had the port die first. I file my reliability thoughts under anecdotes right now and would happily try alternatives. Wireless charging for now.

I wouldn't mind if they switched to usb-c but it's not even close to being a deal breaker for me. But I do see the advantages of it.

Removing the port sounds inconvenient. I tend to wireless charge at home but it’s handy having a plug-in cable for travelling and at work. I also plug earphones into my phone so this might be the end completely of listening to music with my iPhone. I’ve already gotten rid of iTunes and now only use amazon music. Back to the days of having a separate MP3 player lol.
