I too am feeling pretty good about my Early 2008 Octo 2.8 Mac Pro (with 8800GT) - especially considering the replies here - very encouraging!
Am curious to see bench-marks, especially since I have 6GB of RAM now installed which matches the Early 09 Octo.
The £280 for the upgrade is fairly horrific if not unexpected.
Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a Mini DisplayPort to standard DisplayPort adaptor? My Dell 2408WFP has DisplayPort.

Seems to be common theme. Kind of a disappointment so I love my Early 2008 MP all the same as well. :D

Is anyone selling the last generation Mac Pro model at closeout prices? Can the old Mac Pro be upgraded to the 4870 video card?

I would love the last generation model, upgrade it myself to 24-32GB ram, and upgrade the video to the 4870 video card.

could someone bench 2008 octo vs 2009 quad? (baseline)

i KNOW i am annoying i just want to wallow in happiness of my purchase last year. :D

Hell yeah, a gloating thread! http://upc.*************/uploads/smilies/chestbump.gif

Allow me to suggestively fondle my own early 2008 MP. "Oooooerrr, you sexy RAM taking bitch!"

LOL I've never been one to do that but yeah, I'm feeling ok about it today.

accordingly the 4870 is said to be an upgrade option for the Early 2008 MacPro models.

I recently just sold mine at a fairly good price (on my end at least)....which i guess was pretty fortunate considering with the new releases the value would significantly decrease...especially now with the new releases.
Im switching to mobile platforms...and while the macpros have always been a stunner...this one to me is kind of ... ehh what the...

the architecture seems nice & all fwiw.

I am looking at a video editing and encoding station, photo editing, and a virtual machine mega machine.

Its wonderful for us e2008 owners...

We can instead of selling/buying, upgrade and wait for another revision.

I am fully into every other update from now on. It seems a sensible path.

Also, putting the dualcore WD Caviar Black 1TB into my pro was a very sound investment.

Hoping that 8 gb of RAM will also feel as warm and fuzzy in retrospect.

Yes, exactly what I would like to see.

I think that the 8 Core 2008 2.8GHZ will still overpower the new 2.66GHZ Quad and that is why I am proud to say I am keeping my Octocore beast. I am just going to be upgrading my 8800 to the 4870 which I must say I am really disappointed in Apple for not offering a better graphics card.

Ok , i guess this will be the big question
having a 8-core 2.88 mac pro , what is the performance differance , if any, with the new nehalem 2.2 8- core?

as they just came out today , i dont expect anyone to have it . But eagerly await since i have till march 9th to swap it out.

I assume these do not ship to the UK?
They ship to the US and Canada only I think. But it's an indication of where prices are going. ATI is rumored to be slashing 4870's to $149 in anticipation of a new model soon.

I'm toooo...

Felling ' so good

every apple update make people happy

this time 'early-2008 owner' is happier side

now have a plan to upgrade my 8c 2.8 base machine

1) HD 4870 512MB
2) Add a ram to 10 GB from 2 GB
3) Add a faster HDD (or SSD)
4) add an 30" LCD Display (from 20" ACD)

Given the new models pricing, those with '08 MP's might not feel so bad. ;)

I'm glad I decided to build. :D Cheaper, and I get the internals I want. Apple still hasn't increased the HDD bays.

I feel that the 2.8 8-core mac pro 2008 was a great deal when I see the overpriced 2009 specs.
I think that with snow leopard and upgrading the video card to the 4870 so snow leopard can use it for better performance, and the next generation adobe and apple software that finally start to make use of multiple cores and larger amounts of ram, I will see a very good performance boost for only a few hundred pounds spent on hardware.
If I was buying now I would balk at the overpriced specs.

I just want to know where I can find the 2008 Mac Pros at closeout/discounted pricing.
If it happens, I'd check out Apple's Authorized Resellers and look for refurbished models as well. They might use this outlet to dispose of the '08 models left over. ;)

Good luck. :)

i'm very glad too.my 8cores 2.66 early 2008 mac pro doesn't feel too old after this upgrade.
but can i plug the 24 led cinema display in my ealry 2008?
what i have to do?
