I keep thinking to myself that even at $699 you probably shouldn't buy a brand new 16gb M2 MacBook Air simply for the fact you're buying, brand new, an already 3 year old device. Am I crazy?

Yes, you are.

The device isn’t three years old. Do you think they just hold them in some warehouse for years waiting for someone to order then they can ship?

If you’re referring to, it first came out three years ago then that’s a whole different story. Do you have to have the latest and greatest and will it bother you if your neighbor has something better? If the answer is yes, then don’t buy it.

Are you doing something for work that requires intense processing power and you’re on hard deadlines to get things done? If the answer is yes, then don’t buy it.

If you’re using a MacBook Air for general things like browsing the web, a few of document documents, maybe editing the occasional photo, listening to some music and watching a movie then why would you not buy it?

If you have to have the Sky Blue then don’t buy it.

I have an M2 and seriously want the M4 just for one reason. That blue color that Apple decided to put out. Is it going to do anything I do better? Absolutely not. Will I like the blue? Absolutely. Is it worth me spending $1200… No.

Please, if you can somehow explain to me that I’m wrong and I need to upgrade I’d really appreciate that. Right now all the mental gymnastics I’ve tried can’t get me to click the buy button. 😭

Even though the actual unit will probably have been built in recent months, in terms of support (software updates, vintage/obsolete status), it’s true that it will be treated like a 3 year old device. That’s probably the thing that would give me pause in recommending a m2.

The other thing is that a m4 is $899 with edu discount. It’s hard to argue that $200 isn’t worth it for a chip two generations newer and 2-3 more years software updates.

But, of course, the value of 2 or 3 hundred dollars will vary a lot from person to person. I’m sure some buyers just can’t swing $999 or even $899 but can make $699 work.

This is the way I read his post:

very smart thinking! and GREAT post! I'm looking at an M3 15inch Air (16/512) on BHphoto for 1149 (midnight) or 1199 (Space Gray). I would be coming from a 2015 15 inch MBP. So a move to M3 would be MASSIVE! Why do I really need the newest? But that sky blue... LOL. Is it worth an extra 200-250??? I don't know?!?!

Bought an M2 about a month ago and am very happy with the performance. The issue I'm now facing is do I return and exchange the M2 for an M3 that is now marked down to the same price I paid for the M2 or pocket $100 on a price adjustment on the M2 now at $100 less than I paid.

For $100 I'd do the upgrade. Time Machine backup, swap, Time Machine restore. You'll be up and running again in no time.

It will have two years less of major macOS updates compared to M3. The 256GB models are affected by the infamous storage speed debate. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you plan on dumping it by 2028/2029.
