You have a valid point. News travels much more quickly than before for sure.broken_keyboard said:I don't think the world is getting worse and worse. There have always been nut cases, it just that these days because of technology we hear about it more.
Also, bad news sells. And that is what the press is all about.
Take for example, during Rosevelt's presidency. He suffered from the effects of childhood polio which resulted in him having problems going from sitting to standing and vice versa without any help. The press agreed, through a gentlemen's agreement, not to take a picture of him making the transition. AFAIK, there is only one picture of him making the transition and that was taken by LIFE magazine who was authorized the shot.
Then jump forward to Ford's presidency. Poor guy is coming off of Air Force One and slips. Down he goes almost falling the whole way down the stairs. What does the press do? Pan away? Switch to another camera? Nope! They zoom in on him covering each and every tumble. I felt bad for President Ford.
To me, these two examples typlify where our press in the US has gone and is going. News that sells is all that matters. And the technology today makes it very competitive to see who breaks the story to us first...many times without proper consideration for the source or data involved. Kind of like good ole Dan Rather's very embarrassing moment as of late.
Anyhow, we got the press that we have...and it ain't the best for sure.
