The Associated Press managed to track down Tran Manh Hiep, the mobile phone accessory salesman in Vietnam who posted a hands on video of the next generation iPhone earlier this week.

The trail seems to end there, however, as Hiep isn't the owner of the device. Hiep reportedly rushed down to a cafe in Ho Chi Minh City after he heard someone was showing off the unauthorized device. He believes the phone is authentic, and said "when I plugged it into a Mac, it recognized it as an Apple product".

The actual owner of the device is another Vietnamese mobile phone dealer. Hiep said he did not know how the man got the iPhone.

honestly ...I'm getting bored of all those iphone 4g exposure news. we've seen it. we know most details. lets calm down and simply wait for the launch...

I wonder how they lost this one

I don't believe it's actually in Vietnam, apparently it was found in a Vietnamese restaurant in the San Jose area...
...on a stool...

...with some empty beer cans around it

I really feel this is all just one big publicity stunt. Apple knew sales were slipping and what better way to get people pumped and to possibly get them from making any cell phone purchases then to say "hey.. We got something coming".

I wouldn't doubt the final product looking completely different than the two prototype units we've seen.

It's so odd that these unreleased iPhones are being snatched up in the wild. I'm sure Steve is furious and new internal policies regarding unreleased products will be created.

There's Vietnamese beer?

I wonder if Vietnam Airlines Corporation will fly the one who lost the device to Vietnam to sample some more.

I love how the song "how deep is your love" by the Bee Gees is playing in the background at some bar in Vietnam...classic.

Meanwhile thousands of miles away

America prepares for a catastrophic event on every "iPhone on Verizon" related forum around the internet

Of course this is Front Page News... THERE * ARE * NO * SCREWS!!!!! :D

(Actually, I never did like those two screws at the bottom of the device so glad to see them gone)...

So many NON Apple people have heard about the upcoming 4G phone. Funny though, they think it'll offer 4G service and don't realize it's 4th Generation that people are really talking about. Silly rabbits.

I don't really think this is a stunt, though. If so, they would be going after Gizmodo with fear that if was made known that they were in on the thing, they would be in soooooooo much trouble with the law. That's one. Another would be the trade secrets that were made known. Everyone and their grandmother will have a front-facing camera in their next phone, ect... And lastly ... it causes people to not buy stuff NOW...

I think with so many laymen knowing about the new phone, it most likely is affecting sales of actual iPhones now with people waiting for the next one. Could "hurt" profits for one Apple Quarter but then be awesome for the next Q. 6 of one and a ... etcetera.

Personally, I think the new phone looks incredible and I'll be all over it come June.

...some hangover the guy had... he'll need a "hair of the dog" ahahahahhahha

Nah...

This accusation that it's all a big publicity stunt is pretty "out there". Apple has NO prior history of conducting business in that manner, for one thing. But more importantly, publicity stunts only go so far. When searches and property seizures start happening (which Apple can't MAKE a police department do), things have clearly progressed beyond some orchestrated stunt.

The problem Apple is having here has much more to do with the fact that you can't adequately test a cellular phone without putting some of them out there in the wild and letting people actually USE them in all different places.

This is a product, mind you, that's only a month or less away from an official product launch. These prototypes didn't show up until relatively recently, meaning they WERE able to keep them locked down, up until they were almost done working on them and needed to start having people test them in real-world use.

Wow!

I guess these (thieves) guys learned to keep their mouth shut from the whole Gizmodo ordeal. I cannot help but wonder if the Gizmodo fiasco was handled differently by Apple, if Apple would have gotten their second prototype back.

Maybe they still will, who knows!

How did Vietnam suddenly become the go to country for mysterious sightings of prototype hardware months before their release and official unveiling?

If you care to remember the same thing happened with the PS3 slim, a mysterious video showed up of someone showing it off months it came out, while it was still a rumor.

apple PR/marketing is playing these lost iphones like they do the developer releases. every new release/lost iphone has more features shown off than the last one. to keep the news flowing until launch.
