How did Vietnam suddenly become the go to country for mysterious sightings of prototype hardware months before their release and official unveiling?

If you care to remember the same thing happened with the PS3 slim, a mysterious video showed up of someone showing it off months it came out, while it was still a rumor.

if this was "lost" in california again no one would believe it was really lost

I bought a 3G phone with a front (and rear) facing camera about 6 years ago. It was a Motorola, cost about £20 (PAYG) on the Three network back when 3 (and indeed 3G) was brand spanking new. Can't remember the model number now and a search didn't help - but it was huge. Did anyone else buy one of these things ?

How is this first page news?

The same way everything else that gets posted on the first page is news. The editor/site owner or whoever is in charge of posting first page news decided it is.

Thank you, Thank you...... I'm here all week to answer useless questions.

where are the memory card slot gone??????

in the pictures from the 1 lost iphone was an memory card slot, and this one dont have it. again without ??? disapointed

I really feel this is all just one big publicity stunt. Apple knew sales were slipping and what better way to get people pumped and to possibly get them from making any cell phone purchases then to say "hey.. We got something coming".

I wouldn't doubt the final product looking completely different than the two prototype units we've seen.

Because sales are not slipping, they never do this, and everyone knows there will be a new iPhone soon, as there is every year?

I think this will look *very* like the final product.

Would never let that guy touch my iPhone. I kept waiting for him to throw it. Going to have nightmares now. Imagine what he could do to the iPad.

Apple is stupid!!! I said to put a gps tracking or explosive on the 'prototype' then you can track or detonate it!!! Just dont Mass produce them on our iphone with explosive hahaha.

Sales always slip this time of year. And then they pick right back up, sometimes even stronger, after the new phone is launched. Apple has ZERO reason to panic or pull little publicity stunts like this. Especially when no functionality is being leaked, only looks.

I could see Apple intentionally leaking a prototype design to get the general public's opinion; but that's a reach.

I know why sales are slipping.. I meant mainly to stop people also from possibly getting Android phones(like impatient i need a new cell phone now people).

Of course this is Front Page News... THERE * ARE * NO * SCREWS!!!!! :D

(Actually, I never did like those two screws at the bottom of the device so glad to see them gone)...

*snip*

yeah, because screws are always a dealbreaker:

"Dude, check out my new phone it's got [list of awesome features that would make any normal person drool]"

"haha! rofl! lmao! it's got screws! how lame!"

curious...

Obviously there was something on the screen, seemed as if it was album artwork, yet it never flipped as the phone was being moved around. It also would seem that he hit the home button by my count twice and nothing happened.

If it was just the background and locked, it would have the unlock slider...

Does anyone else find the above odd if this is indeed a prototype...

hey did anyone notice in the video the red object with the apple logo? looks like an ipad with a custom paint job...can anyone confirm?

Did someone nominate you a "front page news" police on MacRumors?

I am sure when you start your own Mac rumor website - you can then decide what goes onto front page and what doesn't.

Wow I really learned my lesson; thank you so much for telling me how easy it is to run a website. As far as I'm concerned, I'm allowed to voice my opinion here just as you are. This story was a huge puff piece by the AP, and it's sad that it made it to the front page here.

What "news" is there in a story that basically says "This one guy heard another guy had a new iPhone, so he ran to the other guy's store to see it"?

I don't believe it's actually in Vietnam, apparently it was found in a Vietnamese restaurant in the San Jose area...
...on a stool...

...with some empty beer cans around it

I'd bet a bear the above is correct.

After the last guy got his door busted down and his computer stolen by the cops it seems reasonable to send the phone some place where the local caps will refuse to do Apple's bidding. So the finder FedEx'd the phone to an uncle in Vietnam. I bet we see it done this way every time from now on.

So when you find a phone, or new iPad don't sel it to a guy in California for $5K. Sell it to someone in China, Vietnam, Hong Kong.

This is actually a very good idea. With very little effort Apple could make it so stolen or lost phones are instantly usless. Explosives are not needed the phone could be permently "bricked" just using software. Not just for prototypes but ALL phones should have this, Then word gets out that stolen Apple products quickly become bricks no one will take them.

OK why "brick" much better to have the phone sound an audible alarm, report it's location by email and say "please return me to my owner at xxx" every 30 minutes

Maybe so.. but these "does this really need to be a front page news.. wah.." posts are just a waste of breath. If a particular article doesn't interest you - just move on to the next one. No one forcing you to read any news here, be they on front page or page-2.

Hmmm

Great design on the outside, nice and sleek... Uh, if I was holding the phone for 5 minutes, call me crazy but I would unlock it and look at the icons!!!

What's wrong with that video??? ( I just signed up to ask that )
