Hello,

Those that have iOS 13, could you please plug in an external hdd or thumb drive and tell me if iOS generates a thumbnail of the 1st page of PDF or if it just gives you an icon? Needs to be a new pdf to iOS

Really excited about this part but without the thumbnails of pdf I may as well stick to my windows tablet

Thanks

Thumbnails are generated for common media types, including PDFs. Apple created a whole new highly efficient Quicklook framework for iOS too and it's good enough that it actually replaces the old one in this years MacOS.

So, I find this not to be true
Files app will generate a pdf icon unless that pdf has been opened before by iOS or saved on the iPad. If it’s a new pdf that’s on a external drive, it’s just an icon

Sad this simple bit of technology is missing. Was only holding onto my iPad hoping this would occur but since it doesn’t and no app allows external pdf storage with thumbnails, off to get an android tablet :-(

I'm not sure, what's not working for you? Do you mean, you can't open/look at the pdf on your external harddrive? I didn't try an external storage solution yet, but why should it be different than pdf files on the internal storage?

Let me explain further:

When you open a folder on your phone using ifiles, it will display an icon for each file. Images are then turned into tiny picture of that image and PDFs will display the first page of the pdf.

However, if you do this with external device, the first page of the PDF is not shown and all you get is a PDF icon.

I was hoping with the new external storage that it would show these external pdf icons as the first page but it doesn’t.

Does that help?
