odd question. Ever since upgrading to Monterey, all files saved seem to show the file extension in the file name. I.e. if I save a pic from safari, it will end in .jpg

this didn’t happen in Big Sur.

I’ve also noticed some files that had the extension hidden now actually shows the extension of the file.

has anybody else noticed this?

thanks

Perhaps your Finder preferences have been reset? Try:
Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show all filename extensions to off

As an update, certain files do save without an extension - pages, numbers files for example as do doc files from word. However excel does not and will report it as an xls file extension. Slightly odd behaviour and it’s a bit random.

Isn't that the usual behaviour?

When Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show all filename extensions is set to off, the extension will still be shown if under File -> Get Info -> Name and Extension -> Hide extension isn't selected for that particular file.

When Finder -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Show all filename extensions is set to on, the extension will always be shown regardless of what is set under File -> Get Info.

The answer to this query on the Apple Discussions might help:
How to batch hide or display file extensions

and Why do some programs default to hiding and others not? As I said I started saving some cover art from google and even though filename extensions is off, saving a Jpeg from safari shows the extension whereas in big sur it didn’t for me.
