I have been experimenting with converting my DVDs to iPod-friendly mp4's and have been storing the resulting files on a secondary HD (more room on it).
When I add these mp4's to iTunes (without having iTunes place a copy in my iTunes folder) and then try to drag them to my iPod I get the little "no" icon.
Does a file have to be "physically" located in my iTunes folder for me to be able to add it to my iPod?

Ejected and reconnected my iPod. All is well. Nothing to see here. Move along.
