We're trying to set up a file sharing system in our lab at the moment and we're having problems! It's going to be very useful for file exchange when working on manuscripts etc.

We can see each other's files but can't modify them and save as the same document. We have turned file sharing on and enabled sharing of the public folder vai get Info. Can anyone help - I suspect we are missing something simple but what is it?!

Thanks in advance.

It is probably a permissions problem. Right-click your public folder and select Get Info. When the Get Info window opens, go down and open the Ownership and Permissions tab. When that expands go down and expand Details.

Under Details you will want to set the group to Read & Write if everyone is in the same group (this is a Unix permissions thing). If you have not gone so far as to put everyone in the same group, then set the Others box to Read & Write. Then click the Apply to enclosed items box. This will set the permissions for everything in the Public folder.

If you have problems again when new files are added, this is the most likely candidate. Permissions are usually the number one problem people run into sharing files on a Unix system and the easiest overlooked.
