My 2011 12 inch macbook pro's expansion bay isn't working. I replaced the disk drive about 2 years ago and last week I upgraded the memory and I've tried 2 hard drives in the spot and none will format. I rarely go in my laptop but I'm guessing I broke something?

disk eras failed with the error:
File system formatter failed.
disk utility refuses to format so I can't use any drive that isn't pre-formatted in the expansion bay.
