I'm redoing the hard drives on my G4 Yikes. I have made partitions for various OS installations and installed Tiger on the first one. I want to put 9.2 on the next in order to run Classic.
The problem is that when I try to boot the 9.2.2 cd I get the message "file system map inconsistent". With a BOMB. This happens for 9.2.1, 9.2.2, and the original Yikes software disk with 8.6.
I have booted from the c key and from the startup disk in Tiger.
I installed os9 drivers when formatting the disk.
I am able to start up from 10.2 and 10.0 cd's, and from the Tiger DVD.

I am using a Kensington keyboard and a 2008 iMac keyboard and cannot get the g4 to do a pram reset and it does not chime.
I remember from years ago there was a program tech tool that did a pram reset without the keyboard, I'll try Macintosh Garden and see if that helps.

Can you boot into Open Firmware Cmd+Opt+O+F?

Type at OF prompt:

- reset-nvram
- set-defaults
- reset-all

If you can't get into OF, there may be an issue with your keyboard's being too new for OF to deal with it. Try switching on your Yikes by holding the power button in. This should force your Yikes to start in OF.

Key commands don't work, even with apple keyboard that works on my iMac. Option, c,o,p,r, and c,o,o,f all do nothing. It will boot to the cd by holding the c key.

All attempts to boot from 8.6, 9.2.1, and two 9,2,2 disks get the same results "file system map inconsistent". With a BOMB

I have put OS X public beta, Cheetah, Jaguar and Tiger on the partitions but have had no luck with the classic os.
I even booted with the hard drives removed and no pram battery, same bomb.

Guess I'll stick with OS X for now.

Thanks weckart, I got this sorted out. It was the ram modules, not sure yet if one is bad or just poorly seated. Installed 9.2.1 with 128 module installed. Working now with 896. Nice to have classic. And the startup chime!
Now installing OS X public beta.
