Hello, is there a file that can be found browsing time machine backups that will reveal what the serial or macbook model it was taken from is?

Thanks.

Restore from Time Machine to VM

You can find this out by attempting to restore from Time Machine while booted into a Mac OS Installer. Open the Console and view all logs; there you will find the build-id when the installer checks for a matching model. If you do this within a VMWare instance without modifying the Time Machine image, the restore will fail.

BTW, for anyone trying to restore a Time Machine backup into a virtual machine, make sure there is a PlatformSupport.plist in /System/Library/CoreServices that includes the model and build numbers reported by VMWare. You can modify a Time Machine backup by using the /System/Library/Extensions/TMSafetyNet.kext/Helpers/bypass tool. Otherwise you will see the message "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac".
