Im looking for a faster method of copying my iPhoto library over to my MBP. Is there a way to connect the MBP and iMac via Thunderbolt to file transfer between them?

Yes, it's called Target Disk mode. You basically turn one of the Macs into an external drive. It used to be FireWire only, but now it works with FireWire and Thunderbolt. http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_transfer_files_another_mac_target_disk_mode

Maybe a dumb question, Is a Tbolt cable the same as a Tbolt cross over cable? hoping apple didnt screw us with something special to do this.

I've bought stock standard tbolt cables and target disk mode works fine. Had never heard of crossover version until now.

No special TB cable needed, no idea why the article referred to a cross-over cable. Be advised that TB is only marginally faster than FireWire 800 when in Target Disk mode, but no idea why.
