Hi Adrian

Are you aware of what FileMaker is and what it does or do you only know it from hearsay so far? It's basically a database system, similar to Microsoft Access for example. So, in itself it's actually not supposed to do much. Users or consultants will develop a solution based on it, which then will do something.

So to speak, it is actually a framework for bespoke systems.

Um, sorry for the late reply. I wasn't comparing Bento to FM Pro, I was comparing it to to this Go app, which appears to be little more than a front-end for FM Pro databases that are running on another computer.

I guess with the ability to copy the database to the iPhone it's actually much more than just a front end, and being able to download databases from a website is useful.

I can't wait to grab a hold of this and try some things out on it.

I'm digging some of the general FUD, as in under a year since I've started using FileMaker at work I've found it amazing.

For someone like myself who had no experience creating databases, and only limited coding knowledge, mainly being some web stuff, applescript and Bash, I managed to build a custom digital asset management system for video game dialog, that makes asset management so much easier.

But that's what led me to FileMaker in the first place, Quicktime support, and being able to run Applescripts (and therefore Shell Scripts) from within the database.

So all in all the possibilities that being able to access FileMaker databases from an iPhone/iPad bring could be incredible. It nearly makes me want to buy an iPad, and I've been one of those "It's a glorified iPod touch" kinda people so far.

I am currently using FMtouch to prepare an app with FM11 advanced that once ready will be converted to an Apple app through their app builder. I’m not a full fledge programmer, but I’m quite comfortable in developing DB with FM. The possibility given by FMtouch to convert a FM file into an app with no additional programming experience is quite attractive.

With FM Go it seems that that it could be another alternative to an Apple app. FM claims that a user can download the application through iTune and have it run as a standalone application on your iPhone/iPad. The only issue would the final cost as the user would have to buy FM Go in addition to your application.

Would the next step from FM Go be the possibility to create apps through FM as currently offered by FMtouch but at quite high prices?

Hit my first snag with FM Go. I altered a record on the Mac version and do not know how to update the iPhone version. I know that sync is unsupported. I figured the altered file would overwrite the iphone file. There is no way to delete the iphone file, as far as I know, in order to upload the altered file. Documentation is sparse to none.

Edit - I found the doc on the iphone version and am learning how to get the file to update.

Ideally you will host the file on either FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Server and access it over the network, if that's possible in your situation. Then any changes will be instant, no need to update.

If you just copy the file to your iPhone, you're actually working on two different databases.

Thanks. Mine is just copying over to the iPhone as a reference database. Intentions are to do changes on the Mac and then update the entire base onto the phone. Reloading a database onto the phone that already had the same database was challenging and I don't know exactly how I accomplished it. Documentation is sparse, which is okay, but it can be too sparse. I notified FileMaker as to what I thought about it.
