Did they hire Scott Forstall? The wood theme really makes me feel like I'm databasing on a wooden desk.

For someone who needs DBMS+POS I guess LightSpeed is better than FM since FM doesn't have any POS right? What 3rd party POS solutions are FM users using?

I just received a free trial from the Transmission store:cool:

You can either buy it as a one-off purchase or you can buy it under an annual licence. The annual licence appears to be about a third of the price of a one-off volume licence.

I didn't see that its one or the other on their pricing page.

Go to the Volume Licensing page on the store and download the PDF (link near the top) which explains the options.

Volume Licensing and Annual Volume Licensing are separate pricing models.

Volume Licensing lets you use one version indefinitely. It includes a Maintenance component which entitles you to upgrades within the first year, but you need to renew it annually to keep getting upgrades. I don't know offhand what Maintenance costs to renew.

Annual Volume Licensing lets you use one version as long as you keep paying the annual fee. It spreads the cost of a volume licence over three years, and includes upgrades as long as you keep renewing annually.

You can also get single licences for download or as a boxed product of FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Pro Advanced (no longer available for FileMaker Server). This is a one-off purchase of that version, with separate licence keys for each copy. If you want a later version you can buy a lower cost upgrade, but you need to stay within two or three versions to be eligible for upgrades.

Two other options (for which you need to talk to FileMaker Sales) are site licensing and annual site licensing.

There are also educational and non-profit discount pricing for all licensing options.

This covers some questions.

I am just glad they are not running a subscription service like Adobe, and that some older versions are compatible with new in many cases. For instance, I’m still running version 7 on one mac and maybe versions 9 or 10 on two others. Opening the same custom solution file I created and using it on either Mac works.

I think there's a fuzzy line between 'consumer' (I hate that term) and 'business use', because FileMaker has always been a database app targeted mostly at small businesses. Mom & pop stores, a person who works for themselves or has a couple employees, that sort of thing. So, this product applies to a general audience.

Agreed. Consumers are anyone who consumes a product - be it personal or business user.

Really? I can't quite imagine having my recipe collection in Numbers.

Not that I need Filemaker Pro for my recipe collection. There are much lighter/cheaper solutions. But Numbers most definitely can't handle it.

MacGourmet being one of them.

And I would prefer recipes in Pages. Label each file the recipe with some keywords in the tags for easier searching.

Still, FileMaker is geared towards business users.

The actual value is going to depend on the time between updates and if the user actually needs those updates. For me, I wish I could do one month licenses. I use one computer throughout the year and expand to four for a one day project once a year. The way it is, I'm looking at moving to iPads for two or three of the machines so I can use FM Go for free. So now I have the hardware cost....
