Great news, but is there any security built into a database?

The iPhone version doesn't , which means you shouldn't keep any confidential information in a Bento database on your iPhone.

Usually, when I need a database, I write it in PHP/SQL, then use a web browser. I think most commercial software is a bit overrated.

Good point. I think PHP/SQL is the best solution for most people. My grandma wanted to keep track of her recipes on her iMac, so I gave her a MySQL book.

:p

I block Flash too! :D Go Steve...

Yeah, I have blocked Flash for ages, even when I was still on Windows XP, and after that when I was exclusively on Ubuntu, I never bothered installing the plug-ins.

Right now I don't even use it for YouTube, since the html5 version is working really nicely.

Mine's got a 4-digit password on it right now, in addition to the 4-digit screen lock code to get into the iPT itself. I just wish it was more than 4 digits.

With all thosprductivity apps headding to the pad iam getting even more excited. Really looking forward to my purchase end of April when it'll launch in Germany.

Just think about how many apps will be replaced just by let's say apples "Numbers" application.
There ar hundrets of apps for budgeting and stuff like that, tracking data and so on. Just 9'99$ away u can do all that with one app.

Tracking my labwork will be great on numbers too.
Heck you can even replace the basic features of bento with numbers.

The iPhone version is pretty useless. Especially it doesn't support PDF as a media type, which is ridiculous because most iPhone Apps can read PDF using built-in API. Therefore I felt quite ripped off with the iPhone version.

Because iPad has a much bigger screen, there is no reason the Bento for iPad will not support PDF. Keep my finger crossed.

I disagree. I use the iPhone version everyday, it's really handy for tracking inventory for hardware and software, where carrying a laptop around is kind of a pain in the butt.

I can see myself using this for tutorial notes, attendance lists and so on with my university students though I still prefer Filemaker Pro over Bento on the desktop.

You can use FileMaker on both the iPhone and on the iPad. FMTouch designed by FMWebschool allows you to run complex databases, scripting, calculations etc., and sync via wifi, FileMaker Server and databases opened remotely.
Also FMTouch is x-plat allowing you to run it on both Mac and Windows.

FileMaker encryption on iPhone and iPad

That's not true. Actually we developed FMTouch will allows you to use FileMaker on both the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. We had to go through a very rigorous process through the US government to be able to implement 128 bit encryption. We have implemented the same encryption in our iPhone app as the U.S. government. So yes, database information and database applications can be completely locked down and encrypted. I'm not sure if Bento has done this or not - but FMTouch for FileMaker has.

Great to see all the Apps

Great to see all these Apps coming through, and it is great to see what other developers are doing with the interface. I think it is going to take some time for developers to 'settle' in to the iPad way of writing Apps. The iPhone was a step-change, and I think the iPad is going to be the same.

I completely agree, we have learned a lot after designing apps for two years. The iPad is going to open a completely new playground for great apps. We are excited about the extra screen realestate and the fact that the speed will be greatly improved.

We have just launched a FileMaker conversion tool that automatically takes a FileMaker database and converts it into an iPhone App. It's a real App that can instantly be submitted to Apple for approval.

We'll be releasing the iPad version as soon as it is officially released by Apple.

This thread is about Bento but seems to have wandered off topic. It's not about FileMaker Pro, FMTouch for FileMaker or databases in general, so I was commenting on the security in Bento on the iPad & iPhone.

Bento for iPad

is nice to see

but filemaker pro

is more useful to me

.......

PS Glad to see Arn writing articles again, I almost thought Eric took over the company, it would also be nice to see Marianna contribute more.

Wow, that comment was SO useful and insightful. Thanks a lot for sharing that with the rest of the world.

Bento is an awesome app on the iPhone and Desktop. I have been trying to convince myself to hold off until gen 2. Yeah, that's going to happen.

I serve on boards for a couple non-profits.. every month I go to board and committee meetings, there's a ton of paper work at every meeting. I think an ipad, or an android version, is going to end up solving this problem for me. The ability to take the board packets in digitally, store them in a database, make notes and then have them with me later.. that's going to be really nice.

They get sent to me digitally in a PDF form, so gotta figure out how to work with them.. but it's got me excited about owning a tablet.

Stephenknight, any plans for a iPad specific version of FMTouch?

P.S. i don't consider talking about FileMaker Pro thread hijacking because 1.) the same company makes both products, 2.) the thread is party about how Bento relates to databases on the iPad, which includes FileMaker

Usually, when I need a database, I write it in PHP/SQL, then use a web browser. I think most commercial software is a bit overrated.

Fair enough, but then you're tied to the network (if there is one). A database that can be used to collect information remotely and then synced with a 'home' machine or a server is much more flexible. FMTouch is a good example, and getting better all the time.

Also, designing an end-user GUI as good as FileMaker's in PHP/SQL is a lot of work.

The first company that really cracks this will deserve a great deal of success. The particular area I'm thinking of is clinical data collection in low-resource parts of the world, but there are almost unlimited applications for a solid relational database system on a device with a good-sized touch screen. Maybe a future FMP, but Bento doesn't do it. Pity.

I'm with you. . . the iPhone version might be useful as a way to have quick access to some info when you don't want to carry your laptop, but. . . have to plug it in, syncing isn't smooth, etc, etc. . . if the iPad version is useful, that might be the reason I haven't yet found why getting one might actually be worth it
