I’ve been doing a bunch of thinking about how my current workflows on a Mac or PC may allow me to “actually use the Vision Pro for work.” And by that I mean, use the device comfortably for work related tasks.

Most of my work activity can and is done on the web via G Suite - Gmail, drive, docs, sheets etc. in combination with a desktop-style file system, and a smattering of MS Office, mostly with word. I download a lot of documents for review and attach them to emails and then file away in g suite etc.

Most of this interaction relates on being able to drag and drop within finder or windows explorer, into a web browser field like an email I am drafting or Google drive, and accessing files I’ve downloaded.

Vision OS is somewhere between iPad OS and MacOS. So the extent to which it is more “Mac like” with drag and drop features within the files app and between the files app and safari is going to be a big determinant of if I can use the VP natively for work instead of relying on the screen mirroring. I doubt anyone has any insights yet based on the controlled demos but I will be eager to learn more about this and whether the files and safari app are “desktop class” or more mobile in nature.

Very good point!

You are correct, Vision OS seems to be blend of Mac OS and iOS with a smattering of Apple TV OS.

Since my daily use is Mac OS 90% and Apple TV OS 10%; my iPad use is 0% (2 iPads are unused) -- will be interesting how the AVP will work for me.

I similarly see the VisionOS as eerily similar to a MacOS based on Apples marketing. It probably needs some way to "side load" apps like a terminal app in a sandboxed environment that doesn't interfere with the functions of the AVP/VisionOS. Or I think devs like myself will simply have to get used to just having a Mac around...which I think is the more likely scenario for the foreseeable future.

I can't recall exactly which video, but in one of the promo videos they show the user dragging something from one window into another.

Actually, it's at the 4:15 mark of this video.

So iPad already has inter-app drag/drop, and likely this will just carry over to visionOS. The difference is it should be nicer to use in Vision Pro because you don't need to "swap" apps, they can just be floating next to each other.

What might be more interesting is whether there is a multi-select gesture...Can you "look" into empty space between icons and start dragging out a selection rectangle like with a mouse? Or does the eye tracking snap to the nearest object? Maybe you use two hands to multiselect? (IE Look at first object, pinch and hold, look at next objects and pinch with other hand) We haven't gotten a new interaction method like this since the first iPhone.

"Swapping" apps isn't that bad in iPad because you can hold with one finger, and activate the app switcher or use stage manager to get to the destination app
