I have been reading the posts here about other people having issues with files that are missing, but none of the solutions have worked for me. I have OS X 10.9.2, Yesterday I finished working on Microsoft Word and put the computer to sleep, today when I logged back in every folder was empty, and all the files (JPGs, PDFs, .doc) were gone.

I've tried re-indexing Spotlight, turning off and back on the laptop but no luck. If anyone has an idea of what could be happening or how to recover my files, I would really appreciate the help.

Thanks..

Are you certain you logged in as the correct user?
Try restarting again, and checking to see who you're logged in as.
If no Joy:
Start up Terminal.
Type ls
(that's el ess space)
Open your home folder, and drag your documents folder icon into Terminal.
That should give a line that looks like:
MyMacName:~ lucillebogan$ ls /Users/lucillebogan/Documents
Reselect Terminal and hit return.
What do you see?
You should get a list of files in the folder.
