I've been exclusively using iOS's Files app (better UI than competitors, tags work, etc), but Files won't play audio in the background.

For example, I have a textbook and want to listen to audio for an exercise; right now, I can put Files in pop-over or side view, but it's not ideal.

Anyone know of an audio player that uses the built in file viewer like PDF Viewer does?

I too recommend VLC player for playing audio files from the files app. You can even create playlists with the VLC app so if you’re audiobook is split up you can set the order of playback.

I highly recommend Documents by Readdle for not just audio playing. It also plays video very well and is much much better than the iOS 13 files app

Agreed that Documents is great, and I used it up to now; I find Apple's Files to be quicker and more intuitive, however, and with a PDF Viewer that supports Files, my biggest reason to use Documents is gone.

For now I will probably follow your advice and keep my audio files in Documents.

December 25 update:
With the latest updates, audio once more plays in the background in Files 😊

E.g. you can open Files in slide-over, play an audio file, then minimize Files and the audio will continue playing. Seemingly minor, but nice to have back.
