My Trash on iMac running Lion has, I believe, always worked OK but today I noticed that when I dragged some files from Finder to Trash they (and any other files that may have been in Trash) disappear. Trash is permanently empty. I am not aware of having changed any settings. How can I chnage this so that Trash fills and I can decide whether to empty Trash?

Finder preferences>advanced>check "show warning before emprying trash"
Unfortunately that hasn't worked. I did that (it was unticked) and even did a restart but the problem is still there - files dragged to Trash disappear. Trash permanently remains empty.

Try this (the AppleScript version first):

...and use Disk Utility to repair the permissions on your startup disk.
