Anyone know if the available system memory is the same piece of hardware as the filesystem on the iPhone?

On a desktop computer, the disk is a lot slower than memory, I'm wondering if the speed is essentially the same on the iPhone.

The iPhone filesystem will be a flash memory and the memory is RAM. I think they will be different in speed but I don't know if really and how much. Writing to RAM will be faster because writing to a Flash needs to write a whole block instead of only some bytes.
