I wanted to know if the Crucial M500 SSD which is a couple of years old support filevault 2? Does it also support TRIM?
I am assuming I will have to upgrade to the lastest El Capitan version
SSDs are a lot of money and I wanted to be sure before purchasing one.

    thanks

FileVault 2 doesn't care what device you're using. It works as well with a spinning hard disk as with any SSD, though there's likely a performance penalty with a hard disk. You'll be fine with the M500.

Yes. You'll need to manually enable it using the command
    Code:
    trimforce enable

i thought trimforce was not required in El Capitain. Is that so?

It's required for 3rd party SSDs if you want to use trim, whether you're on 10.10.5 or El Capitan.
