Filevault encryption and RAID array

My understanding is that it is not possible to use Filevault encryption when using software RAID array (such as the G RAID by G-Technology); however, is it possible with hardware RAID (i.e. the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual)?

A second method would be an encrypted image on the RAID. The image file may or may not be as large as the entire array.
