Dead Man Walking

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet

Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino...

A Clockwork Orange has got to be a contender - although the book's great too..!

I suppose the trouble is that a book and a film are very different things so they're hard to compare and say which is "better".

I think a special mention should be made for 2001: A Space Odyssey. The book and film enjoy an almost symbiotic relationship where the film gets better once you've read the book and vice versa. I've never come across another example of this.

As for people mentioning Lord Of The Rings and About A Boy - in both cases, superb films have been made, but I still prefer the books. I prefer the Lord Of The Rings books because the good stuff just goes on for longer :) and About A Boy because so much of what makes it great - like the observation on 'what it is to be male' - is essentially unfilmable.

This came as a spin-off of the Best Film thread...

I mentioned that a film I love is About A Boy, which was originally a Nick Hornby book. Although the book was IMO O.K. I much preferred the film. I also loved the High Fidelity film greatly, but not as much as the book, however Fever Pitch the film was a load of crap.

The most argued upon as far as I can tell are The Shining and Lord Of The Rings...

So, what films do you think are better than their respective books (books written before the film only) ?

sometimes i will see a movie that was based on a book i read, and i will initially get so excited that i proclaim the movie is better than the book

then after some time, i usually end up thinking the book was better than the movie, tv show, or mini-series

i can't really think of a movie which was better than the book right now

but i am a huge WWII history buff and though i thought thin red line and private ryan were good movies, when i rented band of brothers, i was amazed...very, very depressing though, but years later, i still think it's the best war movie/series that i have ever seen

...and there is no doubt that spielberg and hanks wanted to show the horror and senselessness of war in that series

i cried many times with band of brothers and anybody who is "pro-war" or glorifies it should see this series

war is not fun

Sinner! How can you say that  You'll see, Stan Lee's goanna come open a can of whup ass on ur ass now!
Oh common, what's Stan gonna do, draw all over him? ;)

I would put Fight Club on this list too, sure there were differences, but that film truly captured the spirt of the book... well maybe not as gritty as the book, but as close as Hollywood would alow.

2001: A Space Odyssey based upon The Sentinel...
"2001" was also a book, which was written simultaneously with the movie. Both had their origin in the short story "The Sentinel", but "2001" the movie's better than the book because it leaves more to the imagination and therefore has a much greater sense of awe and wonder.

Of course, "2010" came out later and tried to ruin all that. ;)

Both are excellent works of fiction though. :p :D

The People's Front of Judea and The Judean People's Front are sending agents to your location for a 'cleansing.';)

I agree with Yellow. Shawshank FTW!

The Princess Bride is an excellent rendition, too.

The Green Mile, Forrest Gump I thought the movies were really good, probably just a little bit better than the books. I can think of a lot of books that are way better than the movies. The entire Harry Potter series is way better than any of the films. That is really all I can think of. I tend to read books and really either think the movie is a great compliment to the book or that the movie just plan sucks.

Just thought of one that I thought was better than the book, The Hunt for Read October.

I have to go with Planet of the Apes.

I prefer the twist at the ending of the movie over the somewhat corny ending of the book.

edit: I am referring to the 1968 original movie, btw.
