I would like to get into some video editing as a hobby when my MBP arrives. I can get the current version of FCE for $100. Would this be worth it over iMovie?

If you don't mind a slightly more complicated interface, yes.

The more complicated interface is easily outweighed by the increase in features.

Educational pricing. I see it usually goes for $150 educational. However, I was in the university bookstore today, and saw they were selling it for $100. I asked to see if it was a upgrade version or something, but they said that it was teh full version.
