I've been hearing about people that get copies of Final Cut from the internet or from other people who have it and then give it to them. How is that possible without a license number?

To use FCS, you need to purchase it. If you do not, you are not allowed to use it. If someone gives their legal copy to you, they also need to provide the activation codes. It is really pretty straightforward.

Well, technically, it's isn't possible to use FCS without a license key, as the OP phrased it. So you were right.
