Since when is AVI a pro container? I see MXF and Prores mov in professional video every day… can’t even remember when I saw an AVI file in the wild. And yet, this "pro" software can't import AVI files.

No offense...I just never considered them as big player in the phone space, nor much of a high end competitor until the latest in the Sony XPERIA 1 series, which most reviewers I read considered to be a camera that also makes phone calls. What do you mean by getting back into the phone business? Sony was never out of it really.
I do, but I shouldn't have to. I have a couple of digital video cameras I use that record in AVI. It would be more convenient for FCPX to import them and transcode them for me.It can't import Flash files either - both are as good as dead formats.
Transcode those files into something useful before edit. Problem solved.
I’ve wondered what an iPad (Pro)-sized large format camera would be like. Sure, large format cameras have been pretty much replaced by full frame and medium format cameras, but I gotta wonder what kind of quality a camera that size would bring nowadays. An image sensor that size + Apple’s processing would be crazy.Would I be the only person interested in such a product?
I’d love to see Apple add a microSD card, but I’m sure they never will do that. I’d love to swap out cards so I can take more pictures/videos, or swap out different songs. Sure, many songs can be streamed now, but I have a number of albums on CD not found on streaming servicesThis is really neat, and truly worthy of the "Pro" name. It would be even cooler if there was a way to record directly to external storage, like a USB-C SSD or an internal micro SD card, because with video you will run out of space quite fast no matter what size storage you got.
It would be so nice if they allow iPhone 14 Pro to shoot LOG too. I feel like it's totally doable.
Where are you reading that information? Neither the FCP System Requirement page or the FCP Release Notes page mention any such information. Apple says, "Minimum System Requirements macOS 12.6 or later"...ugh, requires 13.4 or above. Hate that they lock new workflows behind their buggy, aggressive yearly released OS
I'm not saying they are big player in this space, just that they have been consistently in the space. Longer in fact than Apple is, I think they even made mobile phones before Sony Ericsson. No offense...I just never considered them as big player in the phone space, nor much of a high end competitor until the latest in the Sony XPERIA 1 series, which most reviewers I read considered to be a camera that also makes phone calls.
I'm right here with you. Would love some kind of a power-bank case that has a nice side grip, the most important buttons (not just shutter), a big sensor and lens mount, ideally an SD card slot as well. Use the phone's sensors for focusing and metering and let the phone do all the processing. I mean night mode, auto-HDR and Live Photos are all fantastic, imagine what you could do with an actual lens and sensor.I continue to find myself thinking: why doesn't Apple create a brand new product that flips the script here? Instead of dealing with the very hard limitations of physics of trying to jam ever-better cameras into a skinny phone form factor, how about develop the best camera form factor they can and glom the phone functionality onto that?
No, that's not hold a camera up to an ear to make a call (buds with mic for phone calls).
No, this isn't an idea about killing the phone and replacing it with a camera. This would be a new product where the entire focus could be on maximizing the camera innovations. The whole phone + iPod + Internet device parts just needs a good-sized screen on the back.
Like photographers have for generations, this camera + phone hybrid (instead of phone + camera hybrid) hangs around the neck or shoulder on a strap instead of being a skinny brick in a pocket...

In exchange for that inconvenience, all of the skinny brick limitations would come off of maximizing the camera picture, video & sound quality... resulting in much better pictures, videos and sound.

Ah, yes, I see that now...10.6.9 requires 13.4. its in the app store banner, and it wont let me update on 12.6.9
Samsung tried it with their NX range of Mirrorless APS-C cameras a few years ago - full size camera with an Android backend - where is the NX range now?....... exactly.I continue to find myself thinking: why doesn't Apple create a brand new product that flips the script here? Why stop with the 14, surely because I can type it, they can also bring it to the 12 series phones!? I feel like it’s totally doable, though I’ve never tried doing anything like it before.Of course, but they are running out of hardware innovation, so they have to do it with artificial software restrictions.

12 totally doable. Log is actually a much less processed video mode, just something Apple has to enable for developers. Why stop with the 14, surely because I can type it, they can also bring it to the 12 series phones!? 12 totally doable.
Translation: TOTALLY doable, but, you know, not TOTALLY doable. The ProRes would probably be too high of a bitrate but h.264 would work. Possible would also be limited to 8 bit, but still useful.
