Not any time soon, the graphics chip right now is really the only thing that distinguishes the Macbook from the Macbook Pro. Also the graphics chip has absolutely NO impact on video editing performance unless you plan on using motion.

Pardon the bump, but this seems relevant...

After receiving my new MB from Amazon, I discovered that people are anticipating MBs with C2D anytime now!!! Talk about ordering at the worst time! But anyways, I asked the salesman at a local shop (who didn't stock on MBs because he suspects MBs with C2D) if he can help me sell my brand new MB to anyone who asks him about MBs and doesn't mind Core Duo.

But if that doesn't happen, I will keep it and maybe order FCE. Which brings me to my question: Does FCE also work fine on the lower end MB (1.83 Ghz processor)? I got me 2 Gb of G.Skill memory so memory shouldn't be a problem, but does the difference between 1.83 and 2.0 have too big an effect on FCE performance?

Also, is C2D that much faster than CD?

Only about 10% at the same clock speed.

I've read about the MBP being up to 39% faster due to processor and HDD upgrades (which meant 10% for processor only like you suggested?), but this means the suspected MB will only have it's processor upgraded and nothing else.

It's becoming harder and harder to keep the MB in its box sitting in my room waiting for a call from a buyer! I can't pretend that it's not there for so long :O.

Honestly I really wouldn't agonize over it unless the new laptops lack a key feature you specifically need. If you made the purchase 3 months ago would still want to sell it? For years people professionals who required mobility ran FCP on single chip G4 laptops. I think you'll be okay. ;)

If I bought it 3 months ago and used it then I would have just kept it and never thought much of the upgrade situation. It's just that it feels wrong paying the exact same price for an item only to discover that it's being updated within days and for the same price!

But you're right maybe I shouldn't let it bother me that much. I will wait until tomorrow evening or something and if no one calls then that baby is mine to play with :D.

Santa Rosa Will Go Into Mobile Macs Late Spring - Probably WWDC Announcement

is there any chance apple might update the macbook line so it has actual graphics memory?
I think you are looking for a larger amount of shared memory for the Intel integrated graphics. If you mean a separate dedicated graphics chipset like in a MacBook Pro then tipdrill is certainly correct. That's not likely to ever happen again.
Not any time soon, the graphics chip right now is really the only thing that distinguishes the Macbook from the Macbook Pro. Also the graphics chip has absolutely NO impact on video editing performance unless you plan on using motion.
True enough with regards to separate ATI Mobility etc. But I wouldn't say not soon unless you think late Spring '07 is not soon for improved MacBook IG performance. Much Improved IG in MacBooks should be a part of the next refresh when Santa Rosa - (scroll down half way to the Santa Rosa 2007 section) comes out then:

Santa Rosa platform (2007)
The code-name Santa Rosa refers to the fourth-generation Centrino platform, scheduled for release in March 2007 with the following features:[1][2]
second generation Intel Core 2 processor (code named Merom) that uses Socket P
800 MT/s front side bus with Dynamic Front Side Bus Switching to save power during low utilization
Intel Mobile 965 Express chipset (code named Crestline) with Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology
Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n mini-PCIe Wi-Fi adapter (code named Kedron)
NAND flash-memory caching (code-named Robson)
WWAN Internet access via HSDPA codeveloped with Nokia (code-named Windigo) [1][2]
EFI, a successor to BIOS
Intel Dynamic Acceleration (IDA), better Windows Vista Aero support [3]
Support for WiMAX (802.16) was originally scheduled for inclusion in Santa Rosa but has now been dropped and will come in 2008 as part of Montevina [4]. There has been reports that WiMax may still be included in the 2007 release.
The Santa Rosa platform will be branded as "Centrino Pro".[5]
This will also become the next MacBook Pro foundation. Graphics are not the only difference between MacBook and MacBook Pro. There are many other differences that are obvious.

Back on point about Final Cut Pro as is already posted above - the entire Studio runs fine on MacBook except advanced Motion work. Even simple Motion work will run OK. With the next Intel's GMA X3000 graphics technology, all should run great on the MacBook. 4GB of RAM will also be possible with Santa Rosa - the first true fully 64-bit mobile platform ever to reach the Mac. This is the year all 32-bit Macs bite the dust. :p
