The graphics are no-texture polygons on top of pre-rendered backgrounds. Maybe all retina-quality images for each scene would take up too much space?

Anyhow, they just refuse doing anything with FFVII, although fans have been screaming for a remake since the PS3 tech demo!

FFVI will be released soon - I bet they haven't done anything but porting it to iOS - unlike FFIV which was a pretty remake (with perhaps a bit childish character models)

Also: they need to charge less for all their ports! £15 is too expensive!

I really bet this has something to do with the idea of upgrading all their textures to retina-quality taking way more space than they thought (and maybe more time)

I'm sure I'm probably the lone nutjob here, but I'm still more interested in seeing Final Fantasy X ported to iOS than VII or VIII. I never found VII's gameplay, characters, or story as compelling as other installments in the series, and VIII was worse in all three respects.

Of course, that didn't stop me from playing (and finishing) either of them...

Delay tactics.

They seem to be releasing them in order, so as long as 6 comes out, you know for sure 7 will be next.

Final Fantasy 7. OMG! I honestly cannot wait!

I wonder if streaming the video content would be considered a possibility... And if you weren't online at the time, you could pause and resume later...

They were fine releasing it on multiple CDs back in the day, why not break it up and release multiple apps?

The "over a gigabyte" excuse doesn't fit with anyone who has the slightest idea about the current mobile s/w market.

I wonder if they meant something else (e.g. RAM requirement).

Yeah I agree it sounds more like RAM requirement, that maybe got misinterpreted.

It's very likely that Square Enix is just too lazy to recreate portions of the game to optimise it for iOS. I mean Chaos Rings has superior graphics to FF7 and it works flawlessly on iOS devices. It doesn't make sense that an almost 20 year old game doesn't work for iOS.

The problem really is that they have to invest money to make it work for iOS, and they're too lazy to do it.

This is the most bull excuse I've seen in a long time, and I've seen some pretty bad excuses.

Square Enix's own The World Ends With You is 2.4 GB.

The PS1 version landed in at 3 discs. At 650 MB each, that's 2 GB in total max. But the only differences between each disc were the FMVs - the entirety of game content, including software, music, character models, landscapes, backgrounds - was exactly copied between each disc. That means that the combined game must be less than 2 GB - and indeed, the Steam version runs in at 1.5 GB apparently. Also, all those FMVs lie in a codec from 1997: with H.264, they'd save a lot of space.

Thus, bull.

Everyone needs to settle the ****** down.

They've only just released VI! I think it's great that SE are re-releasing the entire series in chronological order instead of simply skipping straight to the most popular titles (VII & VIII).

At this rate they should be able to continue releasing the iOS titles at a steady indefinitely (one title every 9 months or so), in the wake of the console releases.

Guess ill have to wait for an iOS 7 jail break and play it via psEMU again like i could on the iPhone 3GS ...

years away....

really ?

Final Fantasy VII spanned 3 CDs thanks to all of the full-motion MPEG that would look like garbage if released today, along with low-res background. Getting that up to even today's quality would take some effort, and they're probably better off redoing the whole thing in polygons will will take a lot of effort.

OTOH I'd pay Square's outrageous prices for Final Fantasy VI on my iPhone and iPad mini - hopefully there will be save data sync so I can play on either interchangeably. The best game in the series, IMO.

Why are they limited to 2 GB right now? Is that an arbitrary limit set by Apple, which they could increase at any point, or is there something technical about it? Does the new A7 being 64-bit alleviate that technical limit?

Also, why not distribute it as 3 separate apps? They could make 3x as much money that way! (Joking, wouldn't really want that.)

Well, they still offer the remarkably tiny 16GB models. They don't want an app using too much of your available space.

Hopefully 32GB will be the minimum next year and they can open up the app space.

The original game was on four CDs using less efficient MPEG-1 video encoding for the FMV. Using H.264 and not having to duplicate game data across four discs, I don't see why this wouldn't fit under 2GB.

They probably haven't even tried yet.

I really don't want them to do this. They need to stop butchering Final Fantasy games just to release them on iOS.

Square Enix have a history of lazy iOS ports. I don't want them to butcher FFVI or FFVII in the same way.

FFV on iOS:
