Finally getting an iphone! Need your help. communicated with verizon phones

Hey guys,

The reason i havent gotten an iphone after all this time is because me and my wife have a blackberry and communicate through BBM throughout the day.

This eliminates the need for texts and such.

My questions are:

1) What is the best app to communicate with her as shell stay with verizon... is there an iChat app or something like that? I really need something real time as opposed to texts.

2) How fast do emails come in? Are they instant like the blackberry mail?

Thanks a lot and hopefully I can get some good info on a bbm like app to communicate to a verizon customer...
