Finally here, fix for GK110B Nvidia cards !!! ( GTX 780 Ti is now fastest Mac GPU)

I currently have a 780 superclocked but I'm thinking of getting the 780 Ti.

Someone said in this thread that you need to use Nvidia drivers and not the standard OS X drivers or else you get a black screen. Is that still the case with 10.9.2?

I have a MVC modified with EFI GTX 780 with two eight pin connectors. MVC modifies the connectors on the card (He shorts three of the pins) so that regular 6 pin cables plug into the 8 pin socket.

I also have a GK110A and it's my understanding that with Nvidia's new web drivers the A & B chips should behave the same.

AHA!!! So that's why my 7970 has three pins on the back of the card soldered together? I never bothered to ask him about it since the card works fine.

Does anyone know if I run the Security Update if I'll be able to get back into my computer without using Nvidia's drivers?

Per the stick thread at the top of the forum, NVIDIA has already released 331.01.01f04 for the new 13C1021 build from the security update. I'm running them both now without any issues.

Here's Instructions I pulled from a post @ Netkas:

Here's the trick that I found to work.

1) Edit /S/L/E/NVDAStartup.kext/Contents/Info.plist in your favourite text editor. You'll have to do this as root via sudo, e.g. "sudo emacs ..."

2) Change the line that says "<string>13C64</string>" to "<string>13C</string>". That will allow the old driver to match on any 10.9.2 OS build.

3) Force the kernel extension cache to be rebuilt by doing "sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions".

4) Reboot, and verify that the driver is still loaded.

At this point, the old driver will match against the new OS build, which should be safe enough to just apply the update then install the f04 driver.

I ended up ordering a old GTX 570 off eBay. I'll use it to update and then reinstall the new Nvidia web driver.

From his post - the answers to your questions are:

1. Since he has not boot screen - NO!
2. 4,1 and 5,1 Mac Pros are very similar except for firmware (which can be upgraded in the 4,1) - YES!

BTW, I'm using a MVC Flashed Gigabyte GTX 780 in my 5,1 with internal power and Nvidia Web Drivers and no ill effects.

Lou do you run any type of fan monitoring software on your mac pro. If so at what rpm does your pcie expansion fan run at? because with a unflashed gtx 780 in a mac pro the pcie fans go to about 1500 wich is loud and much louder than the normal idle of 800rpm with a gtx 120 or 5770 in a 5.1 12 core.

^^^^Pic attached. My GTX is a Gigabyte 3 fan model. They call it WINDFORCE 3X, and I believe it's an excellent cooling solution.

Though I don't have the Nvidia 780GTX, I am using a flashed EVGA 770GTX 4g gram card. I don't use any fan control software and just rely on the machine's default fan settings. The PCIe fan runs very quiet with no fan noise from the card and from the Mac Pro. So far works fine. ( knock on wood )

I also have a 680GTX EVGA genuine Mac Edition card on the other machine. The 680GTX behaves the same way as the 770GTX with the fan speeds on start up until shut down later on. Runs very quiet too.
