At least on my system filevault seems to be the culprit. Once I switched it off, I no longer got the occasional 30 second beachball system freeze!
Maybe one day I will have the courage to flash back to the latest 000F firmware (last time I tried, with filevault on, it was beachball city all the way). Right now, though, I'm a happy camper to which I would add that Mountain Lion is pure bliss.
